Root canal retreatment is performed when repeat inflammation develops in the root system after previous endodontic care. The main goal is to unseal the canals, remove infected material or foreign bodies, disinfect, and refill the canals.
Work is performed under strict apex locator and periapical X-ray control with mandatory rubber dam isolation. Latex isolation prevents saliva with bacteria from entering the tooth and protects the oral cavity from active antiseptics.
Retreatment requires special solvents, ultrasonic tips, and flexible rotary instruments. After eliminating the pathogenic environment, cleaned canals are densely filled with fluid or thermoplasticized gutta-percha.
