A metal-ceramic crown is a metal framework covered with ceramic. Like other crowns, it fully covers a tooth damaged by decay or injury and restores its shape for chewing. It is the most affordable permanent crown in our price list.

Metal-ceramic or zirconia: what is the difference
These crowns are one of the fixed restorations in our prosthodontics department, which restores teeth with crowns, veneers and dentures. Unlike zirconia crowns, they have metal inside:
- Metal framework. Zirconia transmits light much like natural enamel, while a metal framework blocks it.
- More tooth reduction. The crown wall is thicker than that of a zirconia crown, so more of the tooth has to be prepared.
- Dark margin at the gum line. Over the years, a dark line can appear near the gum as the metal base oxidises.
- Lower price. Metal-ceramic costs USD 200, zirconia USD 400.

When we suggest a different crown
If you are allergic to metals, we recommend zirconia: it does not irritate the oral mucosa and leaves no metallic taste. For a single front tooth with high aesthetic demands, an E-max crown is a good fit. E-max is a metal-free pressed ceramic that lets more light through. If a tooth only needs a small correction at the front, a veneer may be enough.

Prices in the table are per crown, and the prosthodontist draws up the full estimate after diagnostics. A prosthodontist consultation costs UAH 1,400. Root canal treatment is charged separately if it is needed before the crown. A crown on an implant is placed as part of implant prosthetics.

Questions about metal-ceramic crowns
It has a metal framework under the ceramic layer. A zirconia crown has no metal and needs less tooth reduction, but it costs twice as much.
They can be placed there, but in the smile zone a dark line near the gum may become visible over the years. For front teeth, we more often suggest zirconia or E-max.
People write about different teeth and different goals. For a back tooth, strength and price matter most, while for a front tooth, how it looks next to its neighbours matters more. At the consultation, we will help you work out what matters in your case.
Not always: we try to keep the tooth alive. If the tooth is inflamed, the root canals are treated first.
Thanks to our own lab, it usually takes 3 to 7 days. In the meantime, the prosthodontist fits a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth.
In our price list, it costs USD 250. The implant itself and its placement are charged separately, and the prosthodontist draws up an exact estimate after diagnostics.
