Full and partial removable dentures
Removable prosthetics is one area of our prosthodontics. Which design the prosthodontist suggests depends on how many teeth remain and whether they can support a denture:
- A small denture for 1-2 teeth closes a short gap in the arch.
- A partial denture replaces a group of teeth and rests on the natural teeth that remain in the jaw.
- A full denture restores the whole dental arch when no natural teeth are left in that jaw.
- A telescopic denture is held by abutment teeth, the natural teeth that support it. Inner crowns are fixed on these teeth, and the matching outer crowns are built into the denture.

When a removable denture may not suit you
With a strong gag reflex or sensitive gums, an acrylic plate can be hard to tolerate. In that case the prosthodontist will look at implant-supported dentures: the denture is then fixed on implants instead of just resting on the gums.
Constant pressure from a denture on the gums speeds up bone loss. Before implants, you may then need bone grafting to rebuild the lost jaw bone. If you are thinking about implants later, mention it at your first visit.
